BoI provides incentives to gen-set imports
Importing power generation sets for Mindanao, which is now experiencing between 8 to 12 hours a day of power outages and the rehabilitation of old power plants, is eligible for zero duty privilege under the Disaster Prevention Mitigation and Recovery Projects listing a new provision in the 2010 Investment Priorities Plan (IPP).
Eng. Rolando G. Acuña Director of the Department of Trade and Industry----“the Board of Investments (Bol) however is going to limit the incentives to power generator sets importation for Mindanao use to direct industrial users only while rehabilitation of old power plants must be required to submit an environmental compliance certificate to avail of the incentives.”
Acuña said “the zero-duty importation privilege for power generation sets for Mindanao would be credited only to the industrial firm that would register with the Bol”.
The power generation sets should be imported only by the industrial user because most of the importation of this power equipment is normally coursed through exclusive distributorship arrangement. This is meant to ensure that the one that gets the incentives is an industrial user and not a trader.
Under the Cooperative Development Act, electric cooperatives are allowed to import tax and duty-free importation of power generation sets. If they are not registered with CDA, The National Electrification Administration has to endorse it to the Bol that the item for importation is not locally manufactured.
“Industrial firms in Zamboanga City which may be interested in registered with the Bol for them to avail of the duty-free importation of power generating sets may visit the DTI-ZCO at 2F VHW bldg. Veterans Avenue. Zamoanga City for assistance, or call us at telephone number 991-2704 or 991-2705”, says Director Acuña – Roger D. Sarsalejo, Chief, Consumer Welfare and Protection Division, DTI-ZCO.
